Clinical Training:

The Developmental Model™ of Relational Therapy Intensive Training

Tailored Specifically for LGBTQIA2S+ Clinicians, Therapists & Coaches

This is way more than a basic CE course...

This Developmental Model™ training is for therapists, clinicians, and coaches who want to take their relational work to the next level.

Through a blend of live, virtual instruction and ongoing consultation, this training has been designed to help you maximize and streamline the integration of this transformative approach to relational work.

The training will take place over the course of 3 five-hour virtual training sessions on Saturdays. This will provide the basic knowledge and the replays can be rewatched over time. The real magic comes from the ongoing consultation group that will meet monthly on the 4th Friday of the month for 10-months.

Transform the Way You Do Couples and Relational Therapy — For Real

Build confidence and clinical clarity with a powerful framework for working with queer relationships.

This isn’t another training you forget in a month.

This is the work that changes how you sit in the room.

Learn The Developmental Model™ — Adapted for Queer Relationships

You’ve probably already noticed this:

Most couples and relational therapy models weren’t built with queer clients in mind.

So you’ve had to:

  • Translate heteronormative language
  • Adapt frameworks on the fly
  • Fill in gaps the training never addressed

This training does that work for you.

You’ll learn how to apply the Developmental Model in a way that actually fits the clients you serve — while still being powerful for all the couples and clients you see.

This Training Is For You If…

  • You want to feel more confident working with complex couples
  • You’re tired of guessing what intervention to use next
  • You want a clear framework you can rely on in session
  • You want to stop over-accommodating and start leading
  • You’re ready to grow — not just collect CE credits

This Is NOT For You If…

  • You just want to check a CE box
  • You avoid discomfort in the therapy room
  • You’re not open to trying new interventions

Meet Your Instructor:

Tom Bruett, LMFT, CST

I am a therapist, senior trainer in The Developmental Model™, consultant, and author of the book The Go-To Relationship Guide for Gay Men  published by JKP. I work extensively with the queer community. As the founder of the Queer Relationship Institute, I provide therapy for queer folx and training for therapists who work with queer relationships.

My work is deeply informed by my experience training under Drs. Ellyn Bader and Peter Pearson in the Developmental Model™.

I use this model every day in my clinical work.

And I’ve seen firsthand how much it changes outcomes — for clients and therapists.

I'm a white, cis gay man, in an open relationship, living on the traditional lands of the Ute and Cheyenne people on which I'm able to live, work and play. I'm committed to decolonizing, questioning, and advocating.

What You’ll Walk Away With

✔️ A clear roadmap for working with couples at different stages
✔️ Tools to confidently handle conflict, avoidance, and sexual issues
✔️ Language you can actually use in session
✔️ A framework that works across identities and relationship structures
✔️ The ability to lead sessions instead of reacting to them

By the end, you won’t just understand the model.

You’ll be using it.

And most importantly — a way to think clinically that sticks

By the time we wrap up:

  • You’ll know exactly where a couple is stuck
  • You’ll know what to do next
  • You’ll feel confident taking on more complex cases
  • Your sessions will feel intentional instead of reactive

↦ A strengths-based queer perspective for training

As in queer theory, we’ll look at the structures and systems in place that restrict queer relationships and attempt to dismantle them together. This will be a safe space to question power structures and challenge traditional narratives — and you'll be able to apply this framework with your non-queer relationship clients, too.

↦ Need-based scholarships

At Queer Relationship Institute we see how the impacts of systemic issues like class and race can make training unreachable for some communities. Our mission is to create training that is high-quality, approachable, and as accessible as possible. Seats are limited and offered on a first-come, first-serve basis.

↦ Refunds

Refunds will be offered up to one month before the course begins.
